Mindfulness as a Complement to Therapy
Simple Mindfulness Practices to Try Today
Starting a mindfulness practice doesn’t require special equipment, a dedicated studio, or hours of free time. In fact, even five minutes can make a difference. Here are a few accessible techniques to explore:
- Mindful Breathing: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus entirely on your breath. Notice the inhale, the exhale, and the pause between them. When your mind wanders — and it will — gently return your attention to your breath without judgment.
- Body Scan: Starting at the top of your head and slowly moving down, bring awareness to each part of your body. Notice tension, warmth, or discomfort without trying to change it. This practice is especially helpful before sleep.
- Mindful Walking: On your next walk — even around the block — leave your phone in your pocket. Focus on the sensation of your feet on the ground, the sounds around you, and the movement of your body. This turns a routine activity into a grounding practice.
- Five Senses Check-In: Pause and identify five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. This technique quickly anchors you to the present moment.
- Journaling with Intention: After a mindfulness practice, spend a few minutes writing without editing yourself. Note what you noticed, what came up, and how you feel. Over time, this builds self-awareness and emotional insight.
Next, consider starting with just one of these techniques. Then build from there at your own pace. The goal is consistency, not perfection.
When Mindfulness Isn’t Enough on Its Own
Mindfulness is a powerful wellness practice. However, it is not a substitute for professional mental health care. If you are experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, mood changes, sleep disruption, difficulty concentrating, or other mental health concerns, it’s important to connect with a qualified professional.
Mindfulness can be one beautiful thread in a larger tapestry of care. On its own, it may not address the full complexity of what you’re experiencing — and that’s okay. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Also, if you are in crisis or experiencing thoughts of self-harm, please contact a crisis line or emergency services immediately. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988.
